Be FIRM!
We touched on the issue of Lobbing too much in our discussion on strategy. I use that as an example because it is a primary method for many inexperienced or lower level players to keep themselves in a point. I do not intend this as derogatory but rather as a realistic assessment. While lobbing can be useful it tends to be over used when we feel pressed - the mentality then reverts to it as an escape. This usually only delays the inevitable.
A well struck and firmly hit ball is almost always the better play. Over use of lobs usually serve to allow your opponent to relax and/or they can wind up being poorly hit and the point is lost anyway. “Cute” shots like precision drop shots also tend to be frequently not hit well. Even drop shots should be firmly hit and not “Babied” so to speak.
Firmly hit balls, even if your opponent is able to hit a winner on them, send the message that I am not going to allow you time to relax and think of what to do - you may beat me but you have to prove you can do it!
