Second Service

February 2025

There is a fascinating statistic that seems to play out in particular on the pro tour - players who win a greater percentage of their SECOND SERVICE points in general tend to win more matches than players who win a lesser percentage of SECOND SERVICE points.

The Australian Open (First Major of the year) was played in January and this was particularly prominent in the Novak Djokovic win over Carlos Alcaraz and Madison Keyes (Wow! Good for her and congratulations!) win over Iga Swiatek.  Both Djokovic and Keyes had an advantage of approximately 25-40% in SECOND SERVICE points won in those wins.

This is not the only factor at work here but it is a critical component of Winning Matches.  If you want to increase your chances for success do not just hurriedly toss your second service point up and hit it with no purpose in mind other than to get it in.  That may indeed be the goal but recognize the importance.  This is especially true for the young player aspiring to move up the rankings so to speak.  Win the battle of SECOND SERVICE and watch your success rate increase!

Now go hit ‘em good and most important HAVE FUN!
